Treatment of the Young
Duties the Child Soldiers Perform
“Child soldiers are being used as guards, sex slaves, and front line fighters” (“Congo Warlord Convicted of Recruiting Child Soldiers”). The terrible treatment of the children and dangerous duties that are performed by the child soldiers is not good. It is ruining the lives of many children that are taken to become soldiers. The worst part is that some of the child soldiers that are girls may return to society while being pregnant. If this happens then most likely the family will not accept them back into their community.
Child soldiers do many different jobs when in the war. “In Iraq, Al-Qaeda uses children as spies, couriers, armed combatants, and suicide bombers” (“Child Soldiers”). These are just some of the jobs that are taken on by the child soldiers. The reason for giving them these jobs is because they are jobs that will most likely get them killed.
These child soldiers are spies for many different reasons. One is because they are smaller and harder to spot when getting information. Another reason is that if they do get killed when working as a spy they can be replaced extremely easily by another child.
One duty child solders must perform is being an armed combatant. Child soldiers are used as armed combatants since they can be replaced quickly when they are killed in battles. They are sent first into combat because there are a large amount of them and if several are killed, then they can be replaced easily.
The children are also being used a suicide bombers. The reason for this is because when they get killed they just get replaced by another child soldier. Also when a child solder is killed in an explosion, the leaders have many more children that can take the dead child’s spot as a suicide bomber. These are just some of the duties preformed by child soldiers.

Treatment of Child Soldiers
Child soldiers are being treated poorly in many different ways. “They give them an AK-47 and as much drugs as the children can consume so they can control them” (“Babies in Arms”). It is poor treatment of the children because if they return back into society they are most likely going to be addicted to drugs. Also when they are on the drugs most likely they don’t know what they are doing so all the violence may not mess with their brains a lot.
That is not the only way that the child soldiers are treated terrible. “They force the children away from their family and put them in war situations for months” (“Babies in Arms”). Again, terrible treatment of the children is happening because when they are forced away from their family they don’t have time to say good bye to their family. Also when in the war they see many people die. This causes many social problems in the child soldiers because then when they return back to society and see someone die they think that it is normal.
They are also treated horribly in their religious beliefs. “Children that are not Islam are forced to convert to Islamic religion” (“Children in Sudan: Slaves, Street Children and Child Soldiers”). It is horrendous treatment of the children because they are forced to change their beliefs in which they have believed in all their life. This is most likely harder for the children that are older because when you are older it is difficult to change in what you have been told all your life.
That is not the only brainwashing happening in the children. “The child soldiers had been brainwashed to think of the majority Sinhalese community as enemies” (“Child soldiers being reintegrated”). This is another form of brain washing because when they are in the community they think of it as a home and a safe place. But when they become soldiers ,they are told to hate them as enemies and to not like the community so that the community that they were once apart of would hate them.
Their physical treatment is terrible. “The children (mostly girls) are forced with sexual abuse such as rape, or prostitution and may get an STD” (“Child Soldiers”). It is not good treatment of girls because if they get away and return to society with an STD (or they may have a baby) then they are not looked at the same way and may not be accepted back into their family/community. These are just some of the ways that the children are treated when they are in the military.
These are just some of the ways that the children are being used in the military. The examples shown also show that the treatment of the children is terrible. It is also not truly a good issue for the children to be going through at such a young age. This affects the brains of the children and even if or when they are able to return to society, they most likely will not be "normal."
